Activity description
Unlocking the Challenge
At the heart of the Black Box Workday Training was a bold idea: make complex HR process training feel like a team sport.
90 Nike managers were split into small teams and presented with a locked black box and 4 locked mini-boxes. To unlock the box, they had to solve 4 progressively challenging assignments — each designed to simulate a key aspect of HR workflows.

Cracking the Code
Each team tackled the black box one stage at a time. To unlock the next level, they needed to decode a range of tasks — from interpreting digital process flows to solving logic problems linked directly to real Workday systems.
A custom-built Workday simulator gave participants the opportunity to practise navigating the actual tools they use day-to-day.
Competition was fierce, but the learning stayed front and centre — this wasn’t just about speed, it was about strategy.
Building Confidence Under Pressure
Throughout the experience, participants built confidence in their ability to apply Workday tools in real scenarios, while sharpening their teamwork and decision-making under pressure.
By the end, teams had not only “broken open the box” — they’d also broken through traditional training methods, proving that even the most complex processes can be mastered through creative, hands-on design.
